The NFL suspends DT Claude Wroten of the St. Louis Rams

Blogged under Bloglockers,Breaking News,Front Page,General Rams Chatter by dawgpounded on Thursday 13 September 2007 at 11:47 am

The NFL has suspended DT Claude Wroten of the Rams for four games for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.  Wroten played in 15 games last season for the Rams and he made 11 tackles, had 1 sack and forced a fumble.

In other Rams news, the team has lost fullback Madison Hedgecock on waivers to the New York Giants.  Hedgecock caught 1 pass for 7 yards last week against the Panthers.  He finishes up his career with the Rams having played in 33 games and he carried the ball 2 times for 2 yards (1.0 ypc).  He also caught 17 passes for 105 yards (6.2 avg).

The St. Louis Rams lose OT Orlando Pace

Blogged under Bloglockers,Breaking News,Front Page,General Rams Chatter,Injury Reports by dawgpounded on Monday 10 September 2007 at 2:00 pm

The Rams have lost OT Orlando Pace with a severe shoulder injury.  The extent of the injury is unknown at this point but it doesn’t look too good.  Pace is the most irreplaceable player on the whole Rams roster and it doesn’t help that reserve Todd Steussie is currently injured.

UPDATE:  Orlando Pace will miss the rest of the season with a torn right labrum and rotator cuff.  Starting right tackle Alex Barron will shift to the left side to protect QB Marc Bulger’s blind side and Milford Brown will now start at right tackle.  This injury could devastate the Rams offense.

Carolina Panthers 27, St. Louis Rams 13

The Rams got pushed around by the Panthers on Sunday afternoon.  The Rams only had possession of the football for 25:53 of the game because of poor defense and Steven Jackson’s fumbling. Marc Bulger completed 22 of 42 passes for 167 yards with 1 TD pass.  He also carried the football 3 times for 18 yards (6.0 ypc).  Steven Jackson had a rough time as he carried the ball 18 times for 58 yards (3.2 ypc) and he only caught 1 pass for 3 yards.  Jackson also lost 2 fumbles which hurt the Rams big time.  WR Torry Holt had a nice game with 8 catches for 73 yards (9.1 avg) with 1 TD grab.  The Rams finished up with 76 yards rushing on 21 carries (3.6 ypc) and they completed 22 of 42 passes for 162 yards.

The Rams didn’t play much defense against the Panthers on Sunday.  FS Oshiomogho Atogwe led the Rams with 10 tackles and LB Brandon Chillar had 9 tackles to lead the way for the Rams.  The Panthers finished up with 186 yards rushing on 38 carries (4.9 ypc) and they also completed 18 of 27 passes for 201 yards.

The over/under for the St. Louis Rams this season is 7.5 wins

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Rams Chatter,If I Were a Betting Man,Vegas Lines by dawgpounded on Saturday 8 September 2007 at 10:55 pm

I think the Rams are going to be the team to rise in the NFC West.  Let everyone else talk about the Niners, Seahawks and Cardinals because no one will be able to stop the Rams offense this season.  Look for the Rams to regain their moniker as the “Greatest Show on Turf” this season as they will win 10-12 games this season.  You heard that here first.  Take the over!

St. Louis Rams vs. Carolina Panthers

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Rams Chatter,This Week's Matchup Report by dawgpounded on Thursday 6 September 2007 at 8:29 am
This is going to be one of the most exciting football games this Sunday because it will be a shootout.  The Panthers will likely try to run the football with DeAngelo Williams and DeShaun Foster to control the clock and keep the football away from the Rams’ offense.  That will be easier said than done.  The middle of the Rams defense will be pretty decent with DTs La’Roi Glover and rookie Adam Carriker teamed up with MLB Will Witherspoon who is one of the most underrated players in the NFL.  With that in mind look for the Panthers to run sweeps and veers to try to get outside the tackle box.  The key for the Panthers passing game will be the matchup between RT Jordan Gross vs. DE Leonard Little of the Rams.  Little is an elite pass rusher and Jake Delhomme tends to makes mistakes when he hears footsteps behind him.  Still, if Gross can handle Little, Delhomme should have plenty of time to attack a weak Rams secondary.  WR Steve Smith should have a field day against the Rams as 2nd year man Tye Hill will get the job of running with him.  The other WRs (Drew Carter, Dwayne Jarrett and Keary Colbert) are all young and talented so that could cause matchup problems for the Rams defense.

Everyone knows about the Rams offense.  It’s amazing that the Panthers shut them out 15-0 last season.  Still, the Rams have even more weapons on offense this season.  They will lean more to the pass but won’t forget the running game.  RB Steven Jackson is one of the best offensive football players in the entire NFL.  DTs Kris Jenkins and Maake Kemoeatu must keep MLB Dan Morgan clean to chase Jackson around the football field.  That might be easier said than done against the Rams nasty boys in the middle of the offensive line.  C Andy McCollum, LG Mark Stetterstrom and RG Richie Incognito of the Rams are the kind of guys you want on your side in a fight so look for them to give Jackson some running lanes against the Panthers’ defense.  Young OLBs Jon Beason and Thomas Davis must keep Jackson contained on outside runs and out of the backfield in the passing game and that’s quite a lot of responsibility.  The matchups to really watch in this game will be LE Julius Peppers vs. RT Alex Barron and RE Mike Rucker vs. LT Orlando Pace.  If the Panthers win these matchups they will be able to give the secondary the help they will need to contain the WRs of the Rams.  If the Rams win those matchups they will score as many points as they want on Sunday.  WRs Torry Holt, Isaac Bruce and Drew Bennett will put a ton of pressure on CBs Ken Lucas and Chris Gamble.  Also, look for QB Marc Bulger to throw the ball a few times to TE Randy McMichael who is a huge matchup problem for the Panthers’ safeties as the Panthers will start Chris Harris and Deke Cooper.

The special teams also might be a big factor in this football game.  The Panthers must contain KR/PR Dante Hall of the Rams because if the Rams have short fields to work with the Panthers will be in deep, deep trouble.  Also, K Jeff Wilkins is one of the best kickers in the NFL teamed up with a stellar offense.

PREDICTION:  The Rams will get revenge on the Panthers for last year’s shutout.  Look for the Rams to win and this football game to go way over the total of 42.5 points.

The St. Louis Rams waive RB Rich Alexis

Blogged under Bloglockers,Breaking News,Front Page,General Rams Chatter by dawgpounded on Wednesday 5 September 2007 at 10:23 am

The Rams have waived running back Rich Alexis despite the fact that he was #2 on the Rams in rushing.  Alexis carried the football 20 times for 65 yards (3.3 ypc) and he also caught 3 passes for 26 yards (8.7 avg).  The Rams felt Alexis was expendable with Steven Jackson, Brian Leonard and Antoinio Pittman ahead of him on the depth chart.

The St. Louis Rams claim RB Antonio Pittman off waivers from the Saints

Blogged under Bloglockers,Breaking News,Front Page,General Rams Chatter by dawgpounded on Tuesday 4 September 2007 at 11:01 pm

The Rams have claimed Antonio Pittman off waivers from the Saints.  Pittman will likely be the #3 RB on the Rams behind Steven Jackson and Brian Leonard.  Pittman carried the football 55 times for 173 yards (3.1 ypc) with 1 TD run and he also caught 6 passes for 35 yards (5.8 avg).  This was an outstanding acquisition for the Rams as getting Pittman is a good low risk/high reward move.

The St. Louis Rams trade QB Ryan Fitzpatrick to the Bengals

Blogged under Bloglockers,Breaking News,Front Page,General Rams Chatter by dawgpounded on Tuesday 4 September 2007 at 7:44 pm

The Rams have decided to only keep two active QBs (Marc Bulger and Gus Frerotte) on the roster by trading Ryan Fitzpatrick to the Bengals for a 7th round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.  Fitzpatrick had a decent pre-season for the Rams as he completed 28 of 44 passes (63.6%) for 249 yards with 1 TD pass and 2 INTs (67.3 QB Rating).  He also carried the football 8 times for 56 yards (7.0 ypc).  Fitzgerald has played in 5 games (3 starts) in his NFL career and he has completed 76 of 135 passes (56.3%) for 777 yards with 4 TD passes and 8 interceptions (58.2 QB Rating).  He also has carried the football 17 times for 64 yards (3.8 ypc) with 2 TD runs.  The Rams were probably going to cut Fitzgerald so it was a good move to get something for him.

St. Louis Rams 10, Kansas City Chiefs 3

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Rams Chatter,The Pre Season by dawgpounded on Saturday 1 September 2007 at 7:03 am

It seemed as if neither team was trying to show anything on Thursday Night, but the Rams still prevailed because of their defense.  Gus Frerotte started the game and he was efficient completing 11 of 14 passes for 97 yards.  Ryan Fitzpatrick completed 12 of 18 passes for 105 yards with 1 TD pass and he also carried the ball 7 times for 26 yards (3.7 ypc).  Rich Alexis (6 car, 23 yards), Brian Leonard (7 car, 20 yards) and Travis Minor (5 car, 15 yards) were doing the heavy lifting in the running game for the Rams against the Chiefs.  Converted QB Marques Hagans continued to impress at WR as he caught another 4 passes for 53 yards (13.3 avg) and a TD.  Dane Looker also had a decent game with 5 grabs for 45 yards (9.0 avg).  The Rams finished up with 91 yards rushing on 30 carries (3.0 ypc) and they completed 23 of 32 passes for 196 yards.

The defense had issues stopping the run but they only gave up 3 points so who am I to bitch?  The Chiefs rushed for 148 yards on 27 carries (5.5 ypc) but they completed 16 of 29 passes for only 111 yards.
